Yamaha Shows Off Snazzy, Impossibly Light Electric Bike Concepts
Yamaha is going all-out at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, bringing a handful of concepts that point the way forward, along with one firmly rooted in the past, just to balance things out.
The headliner is the PES1 above. It’s Yamaha’s latest electric bike concept, and at an unbelievably lightweight 220 pounds, it’s the electric motorcycle we’ve been waiting for. The battery pack is mounted in the middle and acts as a stressed member of the chassis, with the headstock and swing arm integrated into the exceptionally lithe frame. A brushless DC motor is fixed low in the body, with the rear shock below. The transmission is a fully automated box, with the ability to go from manual to automatic control with the flick of a switch. Despite the lack of indicators, mirrors, and a license plate holder, the PES1 looks remarkably production ready, although that gaping hole in the “tank” would be better used to pack a few extra kWh of battery cells, and we have no idea how Yamaha could keep the curb weight so low without severely limiting the range.

Pop Music Makes Experimental Solar Panels Work 50% Harder
Ever notice how you feel more productive while listening to a great song? It’s not just you. Researchers just discovered that a certain type of solar panel works most efficiently when exposed to the acoustic vibrations of pop music. Crank it up!
The UK research team works on zinc oxide solar panels, a cheaper, more flexible variant of traditional silicon-based solar cells. Unfortunately, zinc oxide panels are still in the experimental stages, hampered by a paltry 1.2 percent efficiency at the moment. Zinc oxide’s trick, however, is that it can form nanoscale rods that generate electricity from outside vibrations—like, say, some pumped-up jams.

100% Renewable Energy Isn’t Theoretical, It’s Reality
100% renewable energy to some may sound like nothing more than a pipe dream, but in reality, it already exists. As giant countries like China, America, & India continue to pump out never ending streams of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, small, low-elevation islands are at risk of serious damage from rising sea levels and more intense and frequent storms. But some islands refuse to surrender and are doing everything in their capacity to do their part, even if that means overhauling their electricity grid as a means to achieve 100% clean, renewable energy. Of course this transition does not only contribute towards a healthier planet, but also a lower fuel bill for the islands as it is expensive to purchase and receive diesel and other fuels by sea or air.
